When I first started gardening and landscaping it was not because I loved it from the onset. I had just become a mother and had some time to myself to discover new hobbies and learn new skills.
Instead of starting at the ceiling for hours and being bored, I decided to pick up gardening and landscaping. Starting off can be the greatest difficulty because you don’t know where to start and you don’t really have a point of reference. However, nonetheless, I started my journey to becoming a full time gardener and landscaper.
Don’t overthink it, you just have to start. I think of the problems a lot of us have is overthinking everything and trying to have all the right tools, the right knowledge etc, but nothing is perfect and especially when you are starting out, not much will go exactly as planned so you need to have proper expectations. When in doubt, reach out to fellow gardening lovers. I have many people to thank and nothing feels like taking a stroll through my favorite gardening supply spots.
My first design turned out to be completely different than what I had imagined, but in its own unique way, it turned out beautifully.
If you have not already you should subscribe to my newsletter and get constant updates for my lessons and tips, because knowing some the basics is really important. It gives you some point of reference and guide as to where to start.
Or go on youtube and you will find hundreds of videos teaching you how to start gardening. Before you actually start gardening and landscaping you do need to know the basics and the some practical knowledge of what you should and should not do. Otherwise, starting off with a bad foundation is a recipe for disaster.
While I do say, don’t get caught up in the minor details, I also advise you to at least do some reading and researching before you plunge head right in.
It can be difficult at first even if you know the basic principles and theory, but remember, it takes practice to hone your skills and craft. The more you dedicate your time into improving your design and work, it will get better. It’s important to not have too high expectations of yourself, otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure. Celebrate the small victories and wins as you learn more about the steps.
Difference Between Landscaping and Gardening
When you are starting out, I advise you to start with one instead of blending them together. While some of the principles and things you learn from either gardening and landscaping go hand and hand, when you don’t have enough experience, it might confuse you. I am sure you’ve also heard of the term, jack of all trades, master of none.
If you decide that you need help, I advise that you get it from a qualified, trained professional. The landscape contractor association is a good tool to search for one.
So pick a discipline that you feel more comfortable and at home with. Usually gardening tends to something that women enjoy more often whereas landscaping something men enjoy more due to the manual labor that is required.
That’s it! Start making your creation today!
